What is Shilajit?

Shilajit —
Asphaltum punjabianum

A tar-like mineral resin that exudes from cracks in high-altitude Himalayan rocks during summer. Shilajit naturally contains a complex mixture of mineral compounds and organic constituents, including fulvic substances. Its composition varies according to source, purification and processing. Raw resin is not fit for consumption — it is traditionally purified through Shodhana, filtered and dried before use.

Application in Ayurveda

Traditional Ayurvedic perspective

Shilajit is referenced across classical Ayurvedic texts, including the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. The points below reflect traditional Ayurvedic understanding rather than confirmed modern biomedical outcomes.

01

Rasayana

Traditionally described in Ayurveda as one of the foremost rejuvenatives, associated with strength, intellect and graceful ageing.

02

Yogavahi

Classical Ayurvedic practice regards Shilajit as a Yogavahi — a carrier that is said to enhance the action of other herbs it is combined with.

03

Dhatu Nourishment

According to traditional Ayurvedic principles, Shilajit is used to support the nourishment of the body's seven Dhatus (tissues).

04

Strength and Vitality

Classical texts describe Shilajit as a Vajikarana substance, traditionally linked with vigour and vitality.

05

Shodhana — Traditional Purification

Ayurveda mandates that raw Shilajit undergo Shodhana, a classical purification process, before use.

06

Anupana

Traditionally administered with an Anupana (vehicle) such as warm milk or water, as guided by a Vaidya.

Beyond Tradition

Selected published research on Shilajit

Explore selected published studies examining purified, processed or standardised Shilajit preparations across physical performance, hormonal health, reproductive health, bone health, collagen synthesis and related areas.

Each study examined a particular preparation, dosage, population and research design. The findings below relate to the conditions of the individual study and should not be interpreted as proof of identical results from every Shilajit product.

Human clinical

Clinical evaluation of purified Shilajit on testosterone levels in healthy volunteers

Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial · Andrologia · 2016

Pandit S, Biswas S, Jana U, De RK, Mukhopadhyay SC, Biswas TK

What was studied

Purified Shilajit taken at 250 mg twice daily for 90 days by healthy male volunteers aged 45–55 years, compared with placebo.

What researchers reported

The researchers reported higher total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS in the group receiving purified Shilajit compared with placebo, with LH and FSH levels maintained.

Study context

The findings were reported under the conditions of this study, in healthy middle-aged men, using one specific purified preparation and dosage regimen.

Human clinical

Clinical evaluation of spermatogenic activity of processed Shilajit in oligospermia

Clinical study in men with oligospermia · Andrologia · 2010

Biswas TK, Pandit S, Mondal S, Biswas SK, Jana U, Ghosh T, Tripathi PC, and colleagues

What was studied

Infertile male volunteers took processed Shilajit at 100 mg twice daily for 90 days after a 30-day baseline period, with semen parameters and hormonal markers measured before and after the course.

What researchers reported

Among participants who completed the study, researchers reported changes in sperm count, motility and the proportion of normal sperm compared with baseline, alongside changes in reported hormonal markers.

Study context

This study used one particular processed preparation and dosage regimen in a specific clinical population, and a number of participants did not complete the course.

Human clinical

The effects of Shilajit supplementation on fatigue-induced decreases in muscular strength and serum hydroxyproline levels

Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial · Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition · 2019

Keller JL, Housh TJ, Hill EC, Smith CM, Schmidt RJ, Johnson GO

What was studied

Recreationally active men took 250 mg or 500 mg of Shilajit daily, or placebo, for 8 weeks; maximal voluntary muscular strength was measured before and after a fatiguing protocol.

What researchers reported

The higher-dose group showed greater retention of maximal muscular strength following the fatigue protocol compared with the lower-dose and placebo groups.

Study context

The findings were reported under the conditions of this study, in a small group of recreationally active men, using one specific supplement and dosage regimen.

Human clinical

Shilajit extract and bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with osteopenia: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial · Phytomedicine · 2022

Pingali U, Nutalapati C

What was studied

Sixty postmenopausal women aged 45–65 with osteopenia received placebo, 250 mg or 500 mg of a standardised aqueous Shilajit extract daily for 48 weeks, with bone mineral density and bone-turnover, oxidative-stress and inflammation markers measured.

What researchers reported

The researchers reported that the decline in lumbar-spine and femoral-neck bone mineral density seen in the placebo group was dose-dependently attenuated in the supplemented groups, alongside favourable changes in bone-turnover and oxidative-stress markers.

Study context

This study used one particular standardised aqueous extract and dosage regimen in a single-centre population, and is not directly comparable with every resin, capsule or Vati formulation.

Human clinical

Effects of 8 weeks of Shilajit supplementation on serum pro-C1α1, a biomarker of type 1 collagen synthesis: a randomised control trial

Randomised controlled trial · Journal of Dietary Supplements · 2024

Neltner TJ, Sahoo PK, Smith RW, Anders JPV, Arnett JE, Schmidt RJ, Johnson GO, Natarajan SK, Housh TJ

What was studied

Thirty-five recreationally trained men took 500 mg or 1000 mg of Shilajit daily, or placebo, for 8 weeks; serum pro-C1α1 was measured as a marker of type 1 collagen synthesis.

What researchers reported

Participants receiving the studied preparation showed increases in serum pro-C1α1 in both dose groups from pre- to post-supplementation, with no significant change in the placebo group.

Study context

The study used one particular supplement and dosage regimen, which is not directly comparable with every resin, capsule or Vati formulation.

Human clinical

The human skeletal muscle transcriptome in response to oral Shilajit supplementation

Registered clinical study (NCT02026414) · Journal of Medicinal Food · 2016

Das A, Datta S, Rhea B, Sinha M, Veeraragavan M, Gordillo G, Roy S

What was studied

A purified, standardised Shilajit extract at 250 mg twice daily for 8 weeks, then 4 further weeks combined with exercise, in 16 overweight or class-I obese adults; muscle biopsies and blood samples were analysed.

What researchers reported

The researchers reported upregulation of a cluster of extracellular-matrix-related genes in skeletal muscle, consistent with improved muscle adaptation to exercise, and noted that supplementation was well tolerated over the study period.

Study context

This study measured gene expression in a small group using one particular standardised extract and dosage regimen, rather than athletic performance outcomes.

Published studies examine specific purified, processed or standardised Shilajit preparations under defined conditions. Results relate to the preparation, dose and population studied.
